Language Exchange in Spain
Have you thought about a swap to improve your Spanish? No I am not suggesting you throw your car keys in the middle of your Spanish neighbour's lounge and exchange your Janet for a Maria. What I am suggesting is find some Spanish people on your urbanisation and arrange a language exchange.
Who wants to swap with me?
From my own experience, it seems that for every one British person who wants to learn Spanish, there are at least ten Spanish people who want to learn English. Of course, we have a need to learn Spanish because will live in Spain and although not necessary, knowing the language does make life easier.
On the other hand, most of the Spanish people who want to learn English need it for a specific purpose. It could be that they are students and learning English is part of their studies, they need it for work purposes or they have children and they want to be able to help them with their English homework. As need tends to motivate the learning of a language they will be mostly younger people as older age groups have less necessity.
How do I find someone?
Firstly, don't be shy and ask around. Perhaps, you could make a flyer and post it under the doors of all the Spanish people living on your urbanisation. As language lessons and courses are expensive, people will jump at the chance to have 'free' Spanish lessons in exchange for teaching you. Organise a small party with other like minded British who would like to exchange and invite your Spanish neighbours. You might find people naturally pair off.
Where can we meet?
Anywhere! In each others homes or somewhere neutral like a local bar. Have a couple of drinks and feel your fluency improve!
What do I do, do I need to prepare?
You might find that your levels are different so you will have to plan to suit each other accordingly. Depending on their level, start off with something general like a newspaper article to discuss and ask them to do the same for you in Spanish. Check out the beeb's site http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/index.shtml
Swap Shop
The possibilities are endless. You can swap magazines, books, DVDs, music CDs. Just use your imagination. Surf the net for EFL resources and play games such as scrabble and hangman. Make it fun as you will be less inhibited and learn more freely.
I can't recommend this method of language learning enough. It's free and it's a form of socialising with 'real' Spanish people, which unfortunately most British people living on the coasts don't get the opportunity to do. On the urbanisation where I live, in Manilva, it is really starting to take off with one lady doing up to four swaps per week!

The work crew had to dig out a portion of the dirt floor — it’s a crawl space under my house — in order to pour the new foundation. I was amazed at what they found. Old Bottles A brown bottle with Purex etched on the surface, filled with burnt wooden matches, water and sludge. I had an image of a teenager sneaking smokes down there, hoping to hide the evidence by dropping it all into the bottle. There were tin cans, partially rusted with crumbling labels, remnants of the home’s staples:

The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 Questions and Answers by Alaska Real Estate Expert on Mon 04 Aug 2008 08:31 AM AKDT The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 was just signed by President Bush with some amazing benefits for first time homebuyers. When is the last time someone gave you a $7,500 loan, that has no interest, no payments for two years, and if you do not make enough profit when you sell, you do not have to pay back the loan? That is what first time homebuyer
Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, August 3, 2008 by Alaska Real Estate Expert on Sun 03 Aug 2008 03:30 PM AKDT Positive News H.R. 3221, the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 — which was passed by the Congress on July 26 and then signed by President Bush — allows first-time home buyers to take a $7,500 tax credit from the purchase of a single-family home, townhome or condominium. This is great news for home buyers, but also great news for home sellers as this will ex
Make the decision early on that, when you find your Alaskan dream home, you will hire the services of a home inspector. Although it is natural for a buyer to want to keep expenses to a minimum, waiving the right to a home inspection is not a wise choice. A home inspector will make a visual inspection of the home, examining structure and home systems to determine if they are sound and working properly. It is best that you are present at the time of the inspection so the inspector may addres
FHA allows buyers with credit scores below 700 to purchase homes. In the current mortgage credit crunch, FHA may be the best bet for first-time home buyers. First-time home buyers are defined as anyone who has not owned a personal residence in the last three years. Another factor making FHA a viable choice in mortgage loans is that FHA has temporarily raised its loan limits. (FHA Raises Loan Limits). IndyMac, one of the home lending giants for non-perfect credit borrowers, has gone ou
If you are a citizen of UK or Australia, you are permitted to snicker at this problem. Anchorage, Alaska, just opened its first two roundabouts at a major intersection. Not a big deal if you are experienced at negotiating roundabouts, but Anchorage residents certainly are not. The bad thing is that Anchorage drivers have never been accused of common sense or courtesy. The roundabou
The change in FHA’s loan limits can help you to achieve the American Dream, homeownership. As part of the Economic Stimulus Act, FHA has been allowed to temporarily raise their loan limits. FHA will now insure loans up to 125% of an area’s median house price. The purpose of the increased loan limit is to provide buyers affordable mortgage loans and to help current homeowners who are facing possible foreclosure via FHA’s refinancing program FHASecure. Due to the mortgage crisis, many l
June 12, 2008 Summer Time in Alaska by Alaska Real Estate Expert on Thu 12 Jun 2008 01:53 PM AKDT Technically it is summer. Summer solstice will be here next week and Father's Day is this weekend. Maybe the lack of sun is the reason record numbers of buyers have been on our website looking at homes this past week? It's true there ha
